ST. ELIAS CHURCH
ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM
Our mission is to engage the parish youth, from Pre-School to High School, in learning the Orthodox Christian faith and how to apply it to their everyday lives. We seek to make this experience a transformational one, strengthening their bond to God, helping to advance their spiritual maturity and to build long-lasting relationships amongst their peers.
The 2011-2012 school year will cover the following subjects:
Divine Liturgy – We will break down and explain each component of the service and what it means. We will explain to students how in the Liturgy they should be participators not just spectators. We will also address how this Sunday service should carry into their week.
Parables – We will study these stories from Jesus and uncover what they teach us. We will also connect these lessons into the present day and how they apply to the students’ lives.
Journey to Easter
(Pascha)
Journey to Christmas
(Nativity of our Lord)
How do these two most important holidays involve spiritual preparation? Students will find this out along with the true religious meaning behind each day, developing a greater understanding of our Savior and His mission to save us.
Sacraments – Students will see how each one of these services & acts strongly imprint us in God’s eyes. From Baptism, Marriage, Confession to weekly Communion (and the other sacraments), students will learn what is God’s prescription for each and how each sacrament enhances our closeness to Him.
Creative Arts – This year’s theme “THE BIBLE…FILLS US WITH ETERNAL JOY.” gives the kids a nice broad message to artistically respond to though drawings, creative writings, & photography. Students learn/improve upon artistic skills while demonstrating their comprehension of the lesson.
