In the Beginning…
nother Church School year is upon us, and we are really going to make every effort to keep all parents as informed as possible throughout the Church School calendar year. That is the reason we are going to be sending out this newsletter every two months. On the left of the newsletter you will notice upcoming events along with an overview of the Church School lesson themes.
We are also going to write some short articles talking about things being taught in Church School and how all parishioners can help in building a spiritually productive Church School. A really “wise” woman once said that it takes a village to raise a child, and likewise it takes an entire parish to raise a child in Orthodoxy. It is important that parents make every effort to bring their children to Church School. It is also the responsibilities of the Aunts, Uncles, God parents and Grandparents to also assist in keeping every child engaged in Church School on a week to week basis.
To aid in keeping the kids engaged on a weekly basis, we will be posting the lessons on the Saint Elias Church website. This will allow the children to keep the continuity of the Church School education even when parents are unable to attend Church and at the same time give parents an idea what their children are learning over the course of the year.

Preparing Your Child for Church

As we do every year, and with the help of Holly Kane, we will be kicking off the year with our “Ice Cream Social”. This will give students the chance to meet their Church School teachers and
at the same time engorge themselves with ice cream. We will also talk about the theme of light and some of the important ideas we will be covering in the coming months.
Light is a very important theme in the Orthodox Church and in our spiritual lives. We will talk about Christ being “the Light of the World” and how our good works act as light and how we should let our faith shine. We have many other subjects related to light from the Old Testament to Lucifer to different feast days. We will have an arts and crafts project where we will be making prayer candles so that they have something to light when they pray at night. We will also have the kids learn some of the music we sing during liturgy. We will even try to provide some “extra” incentives for the kids to attend and participate.
The teachers and I are really looking forward to this year. We have some new volunteers that should help in many aspects of Church School. We have new teachers bringing new life and energy into the class room. We have a new Creative Arts director that has a great deal of art experience to help the kids create projects throughout the year. This will be a full year with many activities so please keep your kids coming every Sunday and I promise, God willing, you will not be disappointed.
